PROJECTS: International 48 Hour Film Competition! - Written by Thuy Ng

Recently I was very lucky to have participated in the 48 hour competition with one of the best group of people I have ever encountered, which included fellow college mates David Minh Tam Nguyen and David Vuong and other awesome young emerging filmmakers such as Anh Nguyen, Andrew Tran and Lisa Tran, young budding actors Lisa Nguyen, Wattanak Sam, William Nguyen and Catherine Ho and our talented composer Alan Le. Under the name of Team Panda Clap we were ready to roll and overcome everything thing that weekend threw at us including the forecasted rainy weather.
Our requirements included a piece of chalk, our line of dialogue “Something’s not right”, a chef character by the name of Steve or Stephanie and our genre was fantasy. For reasons I do not remember the story we came up with required a red couch to be lugged to the middle of the forest, and also our male lead (Wattanak Sam) to be tied to a chair in the middle of the forest. We got a lot of funny looks from the nearby neighbourhood.
It was a crazy 48 hours, at times it got a little stressful, particularly towards the end, but despite the pressure and time limits we still managed to laugh a lot and have heaps of fun. It was an unforgettable experience working with these people and getting to know each and every one’s quirky personalities.
Our director David Minh Tam Nguyen was very on the ball, giving precise directions on what he wanted. Our leading lady Lisa Nguyen showed great potential as an actress fully relishing in an evil leading lady character. I am so thankful to have gotten our music composer on board Alan Le, who with his great talent made our film badass. I am so sorry to Catherine Ho and her family to for trashing her house three days straight.
I’ll like to thank each and every person in the team for their dedication, it was a wonderful crew and I couldn’t have asked for a more quirky and innovative crew who embodied the true spirit of guerrilla film making. When 48 hour ended it was truly sad to see everyone depart, after spending a crazy 48 hours together creating strong bonds as a crew.
Also a thank you to Maria Tran and Film Club, with out it I wouldn’t have meet David Minh Tam Nguyen or Alan Le who were key people in the making of this film. The collaboration of local talent wouldn’t have been possible without Film Club! Hopefully you guys would be able to check out our short film entry (Hangman) very soon!
It was also good to see other local filmmakers participate in the competition including Vinh Nguyen (Blatant Labs) and Nashi Box. Hopefully next year we’ll see a lot more local film makers enter the competition. To all young film makers in Western Sydney I strongly encourage you guys to participate in this competition, it is a truly worthwhile experience.
:)
Thuy
